Skyspace Lech
Between the sky and light art
Around 15 minutes from Oberlech, above the Alpe Tannegg, lies an artistic wonder: the Skyspace Lech, designed by renowned light artist James Turrell. This walk-in light installation harmonises space, light and sky and opens up in its dome especially at sunrise and sunset to show off the play of light to its best advantage.
The way there leaves room for quiet anticipation: via winter hiking trails, with the Schlosskopfbahn cable car or on skis via piste 210. Inside the Skyspace, an oval “Sensing Room” awaits you, through which a controlled ring of light works, whose colour and light moods in combination with the unobstructed view of the sky have a meditative effect. A visit takes around 45 minutes – and allows you to experience the silence between the sky and the room.
For your visit
- Pay attention to weather conditions – the Skyspace only opens the dome when the sky is clear.
- Plan to arrive about 10 minutes before sunset (or 45 minutes before sunrise).
- Group visits are often possible by appointment – max. 30 people
- The Skyspace Tour programme is regularly scheduled at the same time as the Rotary programme
The Skyspace is not a pure art object, but a moment in which perception and nature merge – a subtle staging of opening, of pausing and of the gaze that often sees more than the eye thinks it can grasp.
Here you can feel space and time.
